Advice to Young Professionals

A few weeks ago during our Summer Digital Clinic Internship weekly meeting, we were able to hear from a panel of professionals about, “Finding Your Career in Digital". In this panel, there were many great takeaway points that I believe are beneficial for all young professionals. Life after college can be scary, and finding your first real world job can be even scarier.

Networking Tips:

  • Reach out to people that you want to be surrounded by (in field you want to be in)
  • When adding other professionals on LinkedIn never send a blank invitation, always include a short message
  • Connecting and starting conversation with future employers can help you in the long run

Job Search Tips:

  • When in interviews, don't be afraid to interview employers
    • Ask as many questions as you want, you want to like your job, don't settle
  • Be well versed on other things outside of your skill set
    • Employers like well rounded individuals

  • Be able to iterate how your work impacts others and is beneficial
This is just a preview of the great advice that I took away from the panelists. Finding where you fit, and what career is right for you takes time. Don't settle, take risks. Some of these people discussed that taking the right risks is what helped them be where they are today. The unknown is scary, but it can also be such a great learning experience. Almost everything we do is a learning experience and opportunity for growth. If you are almost done with college like me, you WILL find the right job that you will love! Create and maintain a positive mindset and do what you feel is right for YOU!
